Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage (or "Champi" in Hindi) is an extremely effective treatment that has evolved from the traditional techniques practised in India as part of a family ritual for over a thousand years. Indian mothers used to massage their daughters hair with different oils to encourage long, lustrous locks.

Today Indian head massage has become a stress management programme. The original techniques performed in India have been developed to become more westernised and include massage to areas that are most vulnerable to stress and tension, such as the head, neck, shoulders, face and scalp.

Narendra Mehta (a blind man who grew up in an Indian community where Champi was an important part of life) was the first person to develop and formalise Indian head massage into an actual therapy.  Mehta arrived in England in the 1970's where he trained as a physiotherapist. In 1978 he returned to India where he studied the benefits and practice of Champi. Mehta soon included the neck, shoulders and face into the massage and employed modern knowledge of shiatsu and acupressure to relax tense areas, rebalance the energy and clear any areas of concentrated negativity.

The treatment is non-invasive and can be performed fully clothed, although access to your shoulders should be given if you wish to receive the full massage sequence.
